Civil Rights in Syria

Syria, the densely populated country in the Middle East which is home to over 17 million people is plagued with a plethora of different Civil Rights issues and violations. The issues in Syria range from unlawful killings and assassinations, to excessive deployment of government forces. There have also been hundreds of articles in the past few years surrounding the Syrian refugee issues, which says a lot about the status of corruption in the country. An article from the Atlantic Council that was published yesterday (April 5th, 2021) goes into detail about another aspect of the difficulties of life in Syria; the economic struggle. The citizens of Syria are forced by the government to pay ridiculous amounts of money to exit and enter the country, renew passports, and quarantine due to covid. In-turn, this causes the citizens to be less likely to leave the country, despite its many issues. This problem is exacerbated by the fact that over 90% of Syria’s population is considered below the poverty line. If 90% of the population is unable to make enough money to support themselves and their families, there is no way they would have extra money to exit the country. There are also amendments being passed that allow the government to bypass a judicial system, and seize assets of citizens who weren’t able to pay government dues that they owed in the past. Additionally, it is now lawful for the government to seize the assets of a citizen's family members, even if that family member is not the person who owes the money. The citizen’s also are violently attacked for disobeying laws, so if they try to get around some of these “regulations” they could lose their lives. To give some perspective into how much the government inhibits economic freedom of its citizens, a majority of Syrians (60-70%) are considered to be food insecure. This means that they don’t know where their next meal will come from, or if they will have a next meal at all. The quality of life in Syria is known for being very low, and it is often referred to as the country with the most civil rights issues in the world. There is a nearly infinite list of systemic issues in Syria that need solving, that need to start with the citizens having enough money to provide for themselves and their families.
