“Liberty”

My definition of Liberty is being free but under the control of the government. Montesquieu’s definition includes the safety of the people. "Tranquillity of mind arising from the opinion each person has of his safety." I agree with this because I also think keeping people safe is important and without rules or laws in a country it will be total chaos. In some countries, laws are way too strict on people. If you are over protectant on people the country won't be a happy place at all. If you just do one small mistake it can wind you down for years of trouble. Liberty is the balance of governmental control. Laws have to be equal for everyone and can not target a single group of people. Laws are supposed to make you feel safe without being confined. An unreasonable law can be one that if you break it, won’t hurt others or yourself. Not only are they for the safety of yourself, but for the safety of others as well.

In the U.S the power is distributed to three branches of government, executive, legislative, and judicial. These powers balance each other out and can “check each other.” This means that one form of government can't decide everything that is going to happen for the country. If one person has power he or she might start to feel a bit too powerful and start to do things that aren’t reasonable (abusing power). Each branch does something different for the government. Laws were made to be just as specific as they needed to be and as vague so the people can know if they are doing something wrong but not feel like they can’t do anything they please. This is important because if people can’t do anything they want they won’t be happy which will then just cause a huge chain reaction of unhappiness.
