Rainbow Loom

A toy that I played with a lot when I was younger was Rainbow Loom. I saw tons of rainbow look commercials on TV that really made me want Rainbow Loom. I also saw people from my school making them and wearing them, so I wanted Rainbow Loom so I could be included in that group of people who would make Rainbow Looms. I remember that I got my first Rainbow Loom at Katy Mills. My family and I went there to shop for clothes and I saw Rainbow Loom on one of the kiosks. I begged my dad to get me it, and fortunately for me, I was successful at convincing him to get it for me.

I spent a lot of time on Rainbow Looms. Once I got my first Rainbow Loom set I would watch countless Youtube videos learning how to make different styles of bracelets, anklets, necklaces, and rings. I would spend even more time actually making those things. My friends and I would show off the Rainbow Loom jewelry we made, make friendship bracelets for each other, and some people even made cute little charms with them. Rainbow Loom became a huge thing at my old school. I think that almost every girl had Rainbow Loom.

Now that I think about it, the advertisement for Rainbow Loom was definitely targeted towards girls. The commercials on tv always had girls making them. Even the boxes that the Rainbow Loom was sold in had a picture of girl’s hands. Even though it was targeted towards girls Rainbow Loom was very color inclusive, which meant it has a lot of “boy colors.” However, Rainbow Loom was also mainly for making jewelry, specifically bracelets, and jewelry isn’t always seen as something for boys. I think all the advertisement targeted towards girls and seeing a bunch of girls in their ads is another thing that convinced me to get Rainbow Loom. I saw all these other girls using it and I wanted to be like them so I got it. Rainbow Loom definitely is not a very gender-inclusive toy but they did advertise their product well to girls, which made many girls, like me, feel like they needed to get it because others had it.
