A common toy that I played with as a kid was legos. Legos started as a very gender-neutral toy, having a variety of colors that were appropriate for both girls and boys. But as the toy became more popular amongst boys they began to change the advertisement and colors of the legos. They changed the tones to red and blue witch are considered "male colors". Once the company realized that they would make a better profit off of advertising legos for boys rather than girls, the company decided to make a few more changes. When the company realized that they could make more money if they made a "girl version" including more pink and lighter colors in the sets. The lego sets also turned this original non gender specific toy into one. By making spaceships or princess lego sets they encouraged the toy to appeal to two different genders. Another big reason why girls wanted the princess sets and boys wanted the space sets was because of the genders of the lego characters. In the space ship and car seats, they included little male characters while in the princess and kitchen sets there were female characters. This highly encouraged the children to buy their gender-specific toys. While legos started out as a gender-neutral toy, as the toy and our society evolved the toy is now gender-specific.
