IHSS In-class: Blog and Discussion: Showering

Why do we shower? It seems like something that most of us do every day, without hardly thinking about it. Most of us say that the reason that we do this is because it cleanses us and keeps us healthy, but that isn't the reason we do it. Based on the Harvard medical school article: Showering daily — is it necessary, two thirds (66.6666%) of us shower every day, and not for our health.

We do it for three reasons. One, the reason this relates to sociology, and one of the two reasons we start is because we do it for the way it makes us look. It washes all the grime off of our skin and makes our hair look slicked back or cleaner. Next, we do it because it wakes us up in the morning, which is the reason I started. If we just don't have the energy to wake up at 7:00 or 8:00 and go to school/work, we take a shower. Finally, this is the main reason we keep doing it. It becomes a habit. We feel like something is missing when we don't shower, so we do it, even if we don't need to wake up early or see anybody.

The reason we should use sociology to study this is that the main reason for starting it is because we want to look nice for other people, which is true for many other activities, like clothes shopping or toothbrushing. If we can understand why people like the look of wet hair, we can understand why people start showering better.
