Growing up my favorite toys where American Girl dolls, through also loved hot wheels, barbies, and Legos American Girl dolls are the toys that I have the strongest emotional attachment to. I got seven of them growing up and I actually still have all of mine packed up in storage, because I am to centmental to get rid of them. I remember growing up that getting an American Girl doll was a big deal because they are considerably more expensive than a barbie. American Girl dolls range from 80-120 dollars and barbies are like 3-20 dollars. This larger price tag also makes the dolls much better quality giving them a sense of permanence and speciness that Barbie just doesn’t have. The first doll I got was when I started kindergarten and she looked like me doll, so the doll was supposed to resemble me. I was super excited. I named her Elizabeth and I wanted to take her everywhere, I remember being really sad when I couldn’t take her to school with me. Over the years I got three from my grandparents, two from my parents, and two were passed down second hand. I got them for Christmas and Birthdays and each occasion they would be hands down be my favorite gift. The social aspect of them was getting to play with them. I remember playing American Girl dolls with my friends, cousins, and nannies.
When talking about why I played with American Girl dolls and my brother didn’t I think gender is responsible, but that's not the reason why I started playing with them. I didn’t think “Oh I should play with this because it’s a girl toy” that really wasn’t me as a kid. I ignored gender assignment as a kid and I looked in both the girls and boys section of the toy shop. I grew up doing sports where I was the only girl on the team, I wasn’t a tomboy whether something was for boys or if it was for girls. I got my first American Girl doll and from my grandparents who like the dolls because they watched my aunt grown up playing with them in the 90’ds (My Aunt is much younger than my Mom). After I liked my first one so much it’s why my parents started getting me them. I also can’t remember ever seeing a american girl on TV like I have seen with barbie. They are a toy that I have amazing memories of and an amazing part of my childhood.
