"This Was a Gold Ring" pg. 106

"She was very excited by the prospect of her first day of school on September 4, 1957, as she was every year. 'The first day of school was always a good day.' LaNier said. 'I had never missed a day of school since I started in the first grade.' That was about to change. As she arrived for her first day of high school, she was stunned by what she saw: a riotous crowd and National Guard soldiers brought in from the government."

I found this quote to be interesting because this shows how shocking these times where. LaNier was extremely excited for her first day of school just to see large crowd of angry people and the National Guard to protect her. Back then White Americans didn't want African Americans in the same schools. So when the nine African American students, including LaNier, showed up, they were not happy and started shouting at them, calling them racial slurs, and rioting the school.

    "The Chili Incident" pg. 112

"Frantically I looked around to see if there were any adults nearby who could be trusted to help. We had to come to believe that the vice-principal for girls, Mrs. Huckaby, made some fair efforts during these situations, but she was no where in sight."

This quote is taking place where Minnijean was about to dump chili on some boys who were calling her names and slurs. The quote shows that teachers weren't even trusted to help because they were on the same side as the kids bullying and yelling racial things at an African American student. After this situation Minnijean got suspended which also shows that the teachers were on the same side as the kids bullying her.

"They Spat in my Face" pg. 92

"She tried several times to pass through the guards. The last time she tried, they put bayonets in front of her. When they did this, she became very panicky. For a moment she just stood there trembling. Then she seemed to calm down and started walking toward the bus stop with the mob baying at her heels like a pack of hounds."

This is quote, it talks about how violent the people at the school riots where. They were so violent the Elizabeth Eckford, the girl in the quote, had to push her way through guards and had to listen to a mob yelling things at her just to get to the bust stop.
