After researching food deserts in Houston and interviewing a staff member at an important organization helping people in food deserts, I learned that the best way to help is by volunteering. Due to covid more people have moved houses do to poverty and fewer people are able to pay for food and transportation, so volunteering with organizations that already help is the best way to do my part. Instead of only going myself to volunteer, I want to make flyers giving an overview of the issue and giving information that will make people feel sympathy for the people in need so that they want to help. On the flyers, I will put multiple organization names to give options for people to chose where they want to help. The organizations that I would like to advertise are The Houston Foodbank, Meals on Wheels, and The Baker Ripley House. These are the organizations I found that are helping the community the most. I want to post these flyers on Facebook and maybe on Instagram as well. This way my audience can be adults and younger people who want to help or need service hours.
Along with making flyers, I volunteered at meals on wheels, helping the elderly who can't afford food or can't get to grocery stores. Volunteering made me feel very good because I got to see the grateful looks on the seniors' faces when I gave them their meals. I drove around for about 4 hours bringing hot meals and cold beverages to seniors, I would knock on their doors (with my mom) and I would bring them their meals. Some people like helping, and some people need service hours and don't have any ideas. By making flyers I am spreading awareness and I am giving opportunities for other people to volunteer at organizations. I also did my part by volunteering and I would love to continue once school ends.
