Georgia Voting Restrictions
Right Now there is a large and controversial conversation surrounding the new voting laws that have been set up in georgia. In the last election Georgia went to President Biden, something which the Governor is clearly still not happy about, and it seem is trying to make sure it doesn't happen again. The new laws remove drop box, polling stations, automatically mailed absentee ballots applications, and dramatically cut voting windows. It will also add more steps and vetting to apsetity ballot applications, and make it illegal to hand out water to voters waiting in line to vote. After these new voting laws were announced many people were understandably outraged that the laws target demcratic voters, voters from low income communities, and minority voters. The reasoning behind the many new complications repuical legislators added to mail in voting seem to connect to the fact that statistics show that an overwhelming majority of mail in ballots in the state were for Biden. However, since many polling stations are often not accessible for members of the disabled community they rely on mail in voting, and these laws will further hamper their path to voting, no matter what party they are voting for. But the largest minority that these new laws will affect in the black community. In the last election it was widely talked about the disproportionate challenges communities of color face voting. Statics show that committees of color have less polling places, have to deal with longer lines, and many more unfair restrictions. Black voters already face all those problems when trying to vote yet Georgia lawmakers new rules will make it even harder, and that's absolutely not okay. There are many who believe that these laws attacking communities of color were not an accident, some believe that Georgia lawmakers are underhandly targeting black voters because of the history of communities of color supporting democrats. It is disgraceful to see this type of civil rights violation, while parties fighting is normal in american politics it is acceptable that black communities, the disabled community, or any other american voters should pay the price. The Citizens of georgia made their choice in the last election and their lawmakers cannot be allowed to punish them for choosing someone from the other party. Those who have spoken out against the laws have gotten large Georgia based companies like Coca Cola and Delta airlines involved in speaking out in the hopes that lawmakers will make the right choice.
