Liberty

    In our world today, people take liberty for granted. We are free to practice our own religions, name our kids what we want, listen to the music we like, and so on, while also staying safe every day. We are able to do this because of the way our government is structured. As it said in the article, separation of power is the best way to achieve this. Three different branches of government, each in charge of their own jobs. They also have the power to check the other branches and make sure they're doing everything right. This is an effective way to keep the government and the people in power from becoming corrupt. People also need to be held accountable for when they commit a crime. The main problem with this is being overbearing with laws, rules, curfews, and more things that restrict the people. Without a doubt, laws are very necessary, but too many can cause an unjust system. If people are seen as guilty until proven innocent, or preemptively arrested before they commit a crime because of an algorithm with no solid evidence, their liberty is being stolen. People need to be able to feel free and safe at the same time. That is what liberty is. A government that is too loose will fall to crime and anarchy. A government that is too strict and brutal in its laws will steal away the liberty of its people. Achieving this perfect balance is not very easy, and countries in the past have fallen trying to find liberty. America is a relatively young country, but as a democracy, it has survived for a good amount of time. We have succeeded thus far because of the Constitution and Bill of Rights.

Arkansas' Anti-trans bill

  Isa Pedersen  Mr. Roddy  IHSS 9 April 2021 Arkansas’ Anti-trans bill  For centuries the trans community was discriminated against. But recently Arkansas passed a bill that highly affects trans rights and healthcare. The bill states that trans individuals are not allowed to get gender affirming surgeries. This included hormones such as testosterone and androgen, as well as puberty blockers. This is said to be one of the most detrimental bills passed against the trans community in ages. Not only this but some states have already passed bills that don't allow trans kids to take part in sports or competitions. These states include Arkansas, Tennessee, and Mississippi. Tennessee and Alabama are already starting to get the same bill passed. Texas is on the list that is assumed to follow Arkansas and pass the bill as well. Andy Walsh Mr. Roddy IHSS 6 April 2021 The Pandemic has Been Bad for Civil Rights  The COVID-19 pandemic has brought a lot of challenges to today’s society. However, in Latin America it is an even bigger issue. Across all of Latin America, the health crisis has been accompanied by civic disruptions causing the lack of communication and justice in civic spaces. Widespread quarantines and lockdowns have put a lot of stress on the civic system of all countries. However, countries with high poverty and large homeless populations have had trouble enforcing rules related to COVID. The lack of enforcement and communication have caused many issues in these countries. “ The measures taken in response to the pandemic have restricted civic spaces at local, national, regional and even international levels.
