Liberty

Montesquieus definition of Liberty stems from the belief of safety. He believes Liberty includes living in a society where laws protect us from harm as well as leaving us free to do as much as possible. But, if someone disobeys those laws, the power of the state will be directed towards you. He defines liberty as "a tranquillity of mind arising from the opinion each person has of his safety". A government, though, must have equally spread power, where not one person has all the power and can abuse it. This problem has a very easy solution which is a check to power, where the government is spread into branches. In that case, each branch must have different tasks, (ex. Legislative has the power to tax) so that each branch can keep each other in check. Montesquieu has spread his ideas and inspired legal reformers such as Cesare Beccaria.
