"I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. (Pledge of Allegiance)

The definition of liberty is; the quality or state of being free/ the power to do as one pleases. Montesquieu states that liberty is "A tranquillity of mind arising from the opinion each person has of his safety." It is quite apparent that freedom and liberty are one of the United State's core beliefs. Free speech, the right to bear arms, privacy, etc. We can speak out, have our religions and opinions without the fear of being penalized. This freedom is partly because of how the power in the United States is divided. In the article, it mentions that splitting up power will keep each other in check. This process is different from monarchies and dictatorships that focus on one primary leader, and since there aren’t restrictions for the ruler, it can often lead to corruption. Such examples include China and North Korea, where liberty is not common in any aspect. Additionally, governments have to have a certain level of balance to law. If the punishment is too great for a crime, it isn’t freedom. If it’s not enough, then that is unfair. One of the controversial ideas in this topic is the death penalty and whether it should be enforced. In short, governments have to be careful by being both strict and lenient and not too much of one. Montesquieu has inspired many of the Founding fathers which is why our nation is free today.
