Liberty

Charles-Louis de Secondat, Baron de La Brède et de Montesquieu or simply,

Montesquieu was one of the world's biggest supporters of political liberty. To be in a state of

liberty is to be free of constraints or oppressive constrictions on your political and social

views, as well as on your overall way of life. A definition of liberty that better fits

Montequieu’s beliefs would be “the state of having as much freedom as possible without

enough to authorize/promote violence and hindrance of basic human rights.” This definition

would apply to the people and the different branches of government. Montesquieu believed

that it is essential to have three different branches of government that are separated in specific

ways as a means of checks and balances. The Legislative Branch which should be divided into

two parts (in the U.S. the House and Senate) should have the ability to create laws, and also

perform checks and balances on each other to make sure that the laws being put into place are

fair. The Executive Branch (in the U.S. the President, Cabinet, and Vice President) shall have

the power to carry out laws, as well as be able to veto laws created by the House and Senate.

Simultaneously, both parts of the Legislative Branch should be able to impose restrictions on

the Executive Branch by using their power over taxing policies. Finally the Judicial Branch

which stays mostly separate from the Legislative and Executive should have the power to

evaluate laws, typically in specific cases. These three branches of the government in theory

would be able to impose enough checks and balances that would prevent the system of

government from falling into anarchy or dictatorship.
