Efforts to Change the Minimum Wage Proves to be a Test
For my economics Research I read an Article from the New York Times about how the Democratic party and the president is pushing for the minimum wage to be push up to 15 dollars an hour. Before reading my article I was aware that they were trying to raise the minimum wage, but I didn't realize how much of a negative impact that could have. I was raised in California were the minimum wage is higher then the national average and has been changed quite a few times in the past years. On the surface raising the minimum wage sounds like a good idea currently the minimum wage is very low and has not been raised as inflation has increased. Currently studies show that our 7.25 dollar minimum wage is not livable. For many a change to 15 dollars could lift them out of poverty. However in reality raising the minimum wage would not only lift many out of poverty it would also cause an estimated 1.3 million Americans to loose their jobs. In reality businesses especially small businesses have taken a hit in the past year and they could not afford to keep on all their workers at a 15 dollar minimum wage. Not only would workers suffer but so would businesses many would likely close being unable to hire enough employees to sustain the business. However you can't ignore the many are not able to live off the current minimum wage. It is left to the question of which course is best for the American people.
When I first read the article It looked to me like a loose loose situation. Unfortunately this is realty and things aren't perfect right now it seems there is no magical option D for lawmakers to take. However it would be unfair to the American people for them to not try and look for a solution. It is going to be a real test to solve this issues but it is an issues that it is important and necessary to solve. The current system does not work many Americans and even if the current plan for solving it is not the right one something need to change. As I will restate I don't think there is a perfect answer whatever the solution lawmakers run with somebody will be upset ad someone will likely take a hit. However they keep fighting I am sure they will be able to find a good solution one that will help those now who are suffering the economic consequences of this unfair minimum wage.
