Biden and Aluminum Tariffs

The article that I read was about Biden wanting to raise the tariffs on aluminum for foreign producers. Doing this will allow the aluminum producing companies in the United States, to sell more and supporting the companies to not go out of business. It is difficult for these companies in the United States to sell much aluminum, with China’s prices being so low. In 2017 the United States produced 1.7 of the world’s aluminum supply, which is the lowerest aluminum made in the United States since 1951. Doing this makes union leaders very happy, while at the same time disappointing foreign manufacturers.

In the article, they talk about how the aluminum manufacturing companies in the United States find it very difficult to compete with the low prices that of China’s production. The reason that China’s prices are so low is that they have no labor laws. This means that Chinese workers work long hours, work in dangerous conditions, not being able to see their family except twice a year, and being paid a minuscule amount of money. While in the United States the workday is on average of eight hours, it is mandatory to have safety precautions. In China, a worker makes around $250-$280 a month, while in the United States a worker makes around $2000 to $2800 a month. Since there is a large difference between monthly wages in China and the United States there is no question as to why China’s prices are so low and the prices in the United States are high. Having lower prices makes it better for profit since China ends up selling more aluminum. They do this at the expense of the worker’s health and the reputation of the workforce. It was astonishing to read about how Trump raised the tariffs on aluminum but the day before he left office he lowered them again. While tariffs on aluminum were increased during Trump’s presidency and again during Biden’s presidency, there is the average number of people who disagree with the tariff increase. The reason for this being that China is not the only country that has to pay the tariffs other countries that are affected are Russia, the United Arab Emirates, and Canada. The people who disagree with the raising of the tariffs are more worried about Canada. This is because Canada is of the United States Military Allies and the United States also revises a vast amount of aluminum from Canada. While increasing the tariffs on aluminum provides great benefits to producers in the United States, some fear that they may jeopardize our relations with other countries.
