Trumps Wall
With his presidency coming to an end, Donald Trump is rushing to complete the infamous wall on the U.S./ Mexican border to stop illegal immigrants from coming into the country. The rush to get the wall completed is getting quite destructive and the wall posing potential issues that haven't been studied or looked into properly by the Trump administration. Currently, the place where the conquistador Francisco Vázquez de Coronado entered what is now Arizona, named the Colorado National Memorial is getting blown apart by dynamite in order to clear land for the wall. This is not only happening there, they're dynamiting and bulldozing mountainsides, desserts, and sensitive wildlife areas. The wall is being built near the San Rafael Valley which is a critical wildlife space home to two endangered cat species, the jaguar and ocelot, who go back and forth between the border in order to hunt for their food. There is also no way of telling how the 24-hour lighting on the wall is going to affect wildlife, especially nocturnal wildlife such as bats who pollinate at night. Landowners near the construction of the wall are not happy. Because of the explosions to level ground for the wall, one resident says that there are; "Clouds of demolition dust, shrapnel, and car-sized boulders have come tumbling down the Roosevelt Reservation onto ranch property". The wall will also worsen flooding. It has been constructed over many dry lake and river beds that will fill up during certain times of the year because of heavy rain. The wall only has about a four-inch gap from it to the ground, so when the river and lake beds start to fill up again the water will not be able to drain under the wall in order to disperse evenly across the whole area where it usually resides. This will result in the area flooding and a build of sediment on the wall when the water dries up again. The construction of this wall is irresponsible because so little research was done on the effects this wall will have on wildlife and the environment around it.
