The State of the U.S-Mexico Border Wall
Although the main focus right now is the transfer of presidential power and the people themselves, the actions of former President Trump still linger. According to NPR, in early December of last year, contractors working on the U.S-Mexico border wall were noticed speeding up their work, blowing up mountainsides, and bulldozing the surrounding land. Concerns have arisen regarding the private land of individuals and the effect this speedy construction will have on nearby wildlife. The U.S. Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) claims that the wall is essential to the security of the nation and to protect it from drug and human smugglers. While this could be true, the area around the wall houses a few very endangered species of animals, and the wall itself could cause flooding due to small channels being blocked off by the wall. Besides the effect that this could have on wildlife, in my opinion, this entire operation is a large waste of materials and money. I think this because the purpose of the wall is to keep out criminals, but as long as the wall ends somewhere the very persistent (and usually most dangerous) criminals will get in. This also creates another problem, immigrants with little to no resources won’t be able to get into the U.S., and even if they are illegal the large majority of illegal immigrants contribute to the economy and take jobs that others won’t. So in essence this could end up not preventing the bad and blocking the good. Also because the contractors started speeding up, creating more of the wall, it will be harder for President Biden to undo certain parts of the wall, something he claims he will do. In general, the wall isn’t the most secure border and is more of a $15 billion dollar insult to Mexico and our relationship.
