The Poison Found in Everyone
I read an article about a chemical that has impacted almost everyone in America. This chemical is called PFOA or Teflon. It has been used in things that we touch and eat every day. Some of these things are pans, carpets, shoes, and similar things that have a stain or water-resistant coat. This chemical is a forever chemical which means t will never die out, it can live forever. The fight to find out who was behind this chemical and why it has impacted so many people started in 1998. A farmer was noticing that his cattle have been dying out. They all drink from the same stream. The farmer, later on, noticed that there was a type of white foam in the stream. Not only had it impacted his cattle, but it also impacted the entire country. You may be asking, how did this chemical make its way into so many people’s bodies, and nobody even knows about it? Huge corporations are behind this chemical. Without it, their companies may not survive. This is not the only thing that is harmful to humans and the environment, and no one is taking action. These huge companies make a very big profit so, in turn, they can do a lot of things to protect the harmful chemical. In the discussion in class, I found out that there has been some action against the PFOA chemical. It has been banned in some forms but not in all. For example, there is an exception for firefighters because the foam that they use contains PFOA. If there is an exception for just one source, it may slow down the contamination, but it won’t get rid of it. This chemical is so strong it can be passed on from mother to child in the womb.
