Is Recycling Really Recycling?

Chevron Phillips says "It will recycle 100% of the plastic it makes by 2040,”

Yet experts say “Plastic production is expected to triple by 2050.”

The oil and gas business has been lying to us for over 50 years. Plastic is not generally recyclable. Reading the article, “How Big Oil Misled The Public Into Believing Plastic Would Be Recycled” by Laura Sullivan, makes me wonder how many other companies lie to us every day that we are still not aware of. The things companies cause can lead to many harmful effects to humanity. In this case, the company is hurting wildlife and nature itself. The company has reassured the public that plastic is recyclable, yet less than ten percent of plastic is recycled. The plastic will just go to waste, hurting Earth.

Ever heard of the big blob of plastic, or a new trash continent in the Pacific Ocean?

That place is where a lot of plastic that we send to China winds up. Now that China has shut down from the coronavirus, all that plastic is ending up in our land, making situations worse than before.

Even though oil companies like Exxon and Chevron were well aware that most plastic cannot be recycled, they spread the false image of how plastic can be recycled. Plastic is cheap to make but more expensive to recycle. They also do not tell the public that only some of it can be recycled some of the time because it degrades with each use.

Lies like these are made for the benefit of the company, ensuring their business will not crash. Thinking only in a business perspective will hurt others just so the business can keep gaining profits. The business industry will do fine, but what about living creatures in nature? Many species of wildlife are going extinct every year because of pollution.  How many other lies have been told by big business companies that we are still oblivious to?
