Toy Blog: Barbies

When I was younger I use to play with barbies a lot, I had a lot of Barbies from the normal Barbie to doctor Barbie to Barbies sisters to Ken. I also had a Barbie Dream House, a kitchen, a speedboat, a plane, a whole bunch of clothes, shoes, and accessories, and a small fair. I think that there was a lot of social pressure to have a Barbie, with all the commercials, the big aisle in the toy section at stores, the television show, and everyone had Barbies.

I remember really enjoying my Barbies and asking my family to buy me one nearly every time we went to a store that had a toy section. If they would say no, which happened more than I would have liked, I would be in the toy section for a while and see all the Barbies and everything that came with them. If I was allowed to get one I could not wait to get home and open it and begging to play, on the car ride I would start to think about all the ways that I could play with my new Barbie. If I would get to my friend's house or somewhere where I could play wit Barbies I would spend hours playing only stopping to use the bathroom, eat, or do help with something. I remember that I would watch Barbie on Netflix and I think I rewatched it a few times, I think that I rewatched it about 4 times. I would also get very excited every time a Barbie commercial would go on TV, I would be so amused and would automatically want the new Barbie product that they were announcing.

Now looking back I see that Barbie is a toy targeted for girls, I’m not saying that I didn’t realize this before but that I would take part in the whole girl's toys are for girls and boy toys are for boys, and if a boy played with a girl toy he was weird and vice versa. I can’t say that I a proud of what I did but I did it and I can’t take it back. I also realize how much influence Barbie has on girls. While Barbie does promote creativity and that girls can be anything when they grow up. There are also some negative things that barbie promotes. Barbie does show that women are dependent on a guy since Barbie and Ken have been together for about 43 years, separating for 7 years and getting back together. This shows that Barbie needs a man to be happy and gives the message that every girl should be with a man. Barbie is a big issue when talking about the body. Barbie only recently came out with different body types for Barbie. Before these different Barbies, it gave girls the impression that to be pretty you have to be skinny and have unnatural features. I think that Barbie is trying to show that all women and girls are beautiful no matter how they look like and that girls can become anything that they put their minds to. They are doing this one doll at a time.

Civil Rights Issues in Syria - Alex Gross

  Alex Gross Mr. Roddy IHSS 6 April 2021 Civil Rights in Syria Syria, the densely populated country in the Middle East which is home to over 17 million people is plagued with a plethora of different Civil Rights issues and violations. The issues in Syria range from unlawful killings and assassinations, to excessive deployment of government forces. There have also been hundreds of articles in the past few years surrounding the Syrian refugee issues, which says a lot about the status of corruption in the country. An article from the Atlantic Council that was published yesterday (April 5th, 2021) goes into detail about another aspect of the difficulties of life in Syria; the economic struggle. The citizens of Syria are forced by the government to pay ridiculous amounts of money to exit and enter the country, renew passports, and quarantine due to covid. Why Do We Keep Pets?

Katie Vojvodic  David Roddy  IHSS A  9/24/20  Why Do We Have Pets?      In millions of households across the United States, a few family members stick out among the furless, bipedal creatures we call humans. Whether it be a furry floof (like a poodle dog or tabby cat), an avian entity (like a parakeet or cockatoo), or a scaly creepy-crawler (like a gecko or bearded dragon), over 65% of Americans own pets. The question is, why? How did keeping domesticated animals in our homes become the norm? Thanks to my extensive research, we might finally have the answer to that pressing question.     According to an article by animalfreedom.org , one of the main reasons that people keep pets is for companionship. Some even go as far as to use the companionship they get from pets in place of a relationship with a partner or family member. It is true that dogs have been proven to be able to detect human emotion and provide comfort, so I am not surprised....
