Herbert Spencer was born in 1820 and died in 1903. The slides tell that he wrote the first sociology text, The Principles of Sociology. Although I didn’t have time to read the whole thing, I did get a chance to read a summary. The summary explains that Spencer saw himself more as a philosopher rather than as a sociologist. It says that even though Spencer took up sociology late in his career, he was still very accomplished in the field and a mediocre philosopher at best. The slides also explain that he is most well known for “proposing a doctrine called “Social Darwinism”.” Social Darwinism is basically the idea where individuals, groups, or people can be subject to the same natural selection laws that plants and animals can be subject to. This is most commonly known as “survival of the fittest”.

The Development of Sociology in the U.S. according to the slide show started in the early 20th century. According to a paper written in 1927 and authored by John Lewis Gillin from the University of Wisconsin the first-ever class about sociology was in 1874 by Professor Thompson at the University of Pennsylvania. The paper says that class disappeared to only reappear under a new name at Yale in 1885. This new name was “Social Science,” and this name was still used at least until this paper was written. In this Yale course professor, Sumner used one of Spencer's texts (most likely The Principles of Sociology). This course or something similar to it is taught in all schools today.
