le petit bonhomme janvier

for my ritual of choice, i decided to go with one of my family practices! this ritual is called le petit bonhomme janvier, (pronounces lay-petit-bonomm-jonveeyay)which in french, means the small january man. this ritual is more of a holiday but could be counted as both. basically, this is a small holiday in late december right after christmas, this small elf comes and leaves little treats all around the house in crazy places like the kitchen sink, your shoes, or the fireplace. this holiday is mainly practiced in louisiana, and it actually originated from my grandmother's hometown of breaux bridge, louisiana. as a young kid, i always remember looking towards going to my grandparents' home and looking for the treats bonhomme had left all around her house, like candies, small toys, and other surprises. another thing i love about this tradition is that now that my younger cousins are small enough to participate in the fun, my sister and i love to help out with hiding and picking the treats used in the scavenger hunt, so my cousins can enjoy their holiday of le petit bonhomme janvier!
