IHSS Blog: Development of Sociology

The first person I am talking about is Emile Durkheim. He has contributed a lot to the study as well as the evolution of sociology. He has created great ideas and theories by creating a stable platform that has been and still is being built off of today. The division of labor concept was one that I really liked by expressing how he believes a standard society should be it allows the rest of us to create our own concept based on the differences and similarities that we experience in our society which is quite a leap from Durkiems standards. What he has written about how society is a system such as our own body is a simple but effective way to understand how society is viewed. We talked about this in a class by replacing organs with the different parts of America's government which is a great example. For example, if the lungs stopped working then the whole body would eventually collapse. The way I see it this has more relation to our society then it did before. I say this because of how our society has grown and reshaped itself with different groups of people standing for different things and trying to express their opinions and its gotten to the point where I feel that if one of those groups were to simply fall apart then something would be wrong that our society and world would be at awe of what has happened.
Next, I have decided to talk about social Darwinism. Social Darwinism created by Charles Darwin, hence the name, is what is more commonly known as natural selection where only the strong will survive. This idea of natural selection has a very powerful role when it comes to the evolution of society and in relation to sociology. Ever since society became something that people would talk about and have opinions one there has been social Darwinism or "natural selection" now more than ever. People all across the world have tried to make strides in their society and make a change but what it really ended up depending on was how many people agreed with what they were saying. Imagine what would have happened if when MLK Jr began his marches and speeches and began to speak his mind give people a piece of what he said what if no one stood by his side, what if people just did not support him. MLK Jr would not have made as much of a difference and impact as he did but that is not what happened. Millions stood by his side and supported him, even when he died people carried on what he stood for and what he believed in. It is shocking how one person might be able to make a point that could change what people think and that has valid proof and truth to it but it actually takes others that had nothing to do with it for it to actually have meaning in some way or else it just dies. I know that sounds somewhat obvious but at the same time does it not also make you think that there could be some creative ideas that have simply been forgotten due to natural selection. While there are still a lot of great ideas and groups that are still in effect it is important to realize that there could more that you agree with and could support all it takes is time to find those things so that you can help it rise and be chosen to stay and go along with natural selection rather than be devoured by it.
