Functionalism is a sociolegal theory when all parts of a society are vital for society to flow. This theory was established by Herbert Spencer, who was an English philosopher and biologist. Spencer thought that the major parts of the society, which he referred to them as social institutions, these where government, education, family, healthcare, religion, and the economy. There were also other sociologists that adapted and expanded on Spencer’s theory. Some of these were Émile Durkheim, Alfred Radcliff-Brown, and Robert Merton. Durkheim applied Spencer’s theory and noted how the major parts of society can change and survive over time. Durkheim believed that the society was composted interrelated and interdependent parts, these two parts are shared by values, languages, and symbols. Some of the parts that he believed were part of functionalism are laws, morals, values, religious beliefs, customs, fashion, and rituals. Alfred Radcliff-Brown was another sociologist that the stability in society was called “dynamic equilibrium”. Robert Merton also thought that functionalism has multiple parts, mostly two categories Manifest functions, latent functions, and dysfunctions.
Interactionism is a sociological theory with the perspective that recognizes social processes as appearing from human interactions. Interactionists say that gender grouping happens because people act differently from others. Interactionism shows that genders play a big part in society. It also says that gender is characterized by what a person does.
I think that both of these theories are in our society in certain ways. The functionalism theory is mostly in some people and communities. For example, certain religions think about different things as a major part of society. Interactionism is in our society with gender standards.
