Why do teens stay up late?

Many teens stay up late talking to people on the phone and doing homework. A lot of times they stay up past their parents and then also wake up earlier for school. This happens because when their parents are asleep they have a lot more freedom. Parents are not at fault during this time. Even good parenting may not help their childs sleep schedule. Teens need more sleep than adults because their brains and bodies are developing. Many schools also start at eight so teens will wake up around six. This is many hours before they should be waking up. Teenagers' biology cannot be changed but a school schedule cannot.  Also, another cause for staying up late is because many of their friends are as well. The ideal sleep schedule for adolescents is from 11pm- 8am.
