Why do humans procrastinate?

Procrastination is something that most or even all humans will/have experience. It's something that comes along with being a teenager. If you do procrastinate, you've probably asked yourself, "Why do I procrastinate so much", or "I know this is bad for me, why do I do it anyways." The reason is because our self controls relies heavily on motivation. When we procrastinate, there are usually certain factors that bring down our motivation like fear of failure or anxiety. When demotivating factors outweigh our self-control and motivation, we end up procrastinating, either indefinitely, or until we reach a point in time when the balance between them shifts in our favor. Many people think that procrastination is something that you can control but it's far more complex than that. Some people feel overwhelmed, have a lack of energy, or have ADHD which all play a big part in procrastination. Something that I've experienced was setting a goal like, go to the gym or get fit. I never followed through with those goals but when I changed the goals to eat healthy and go to the gym after school at 4:00, I started to procrastinate less because my goals became less vague.
