Why do people tell stories?
Anthropologists believe humans cant exist without stories because whether we know it or not, we consume stories every single day. Unlike long ago when the only way to consume a story was through paper and ink, and before using only words to carry on those tales down to generations. In today's time, society has such a diverse variety of options to choose from. This of course comes with new technology every few decades. The article I read was titled the Art of Immersion which I think is a beautiful way to say that society immerses itself into true and fictional stories with newspapers, music, television, movies, magazines, and novels.
Taking the smallest of contexts and creating a visual in our mind we cut out roles for ourselves wishing to be part of the many worlds created by the tellers, creators, and authors. There are certain patterns used in the most memorable stories. In short, you have a sequence of events but what can be found at the center of the greatest tales are characters. Not just any characters but human-like characters, with human traits. These characters are the links we use to jump into different realities. When you have a character that you agree with, understand, or share experiences with, it makes the story feel all that more alive. To ask the question of why people tell stories couldn't possibly have one answer. It's the collective reasons that have kept civilizations going and the world running. Only a handful of these examples pass down knowledge, keep languages alive, culture, give hope, given you emotions, connections, entertainment, and a way to understand some of life's hardest struggles. Whether we know it or not everyone is a listener and storyteller.
